Michelle Williams teamed up with famed photographer Annie Liebovitz to bring Marilyn Monroe to life for the cover of Vogue's October issue. Besides being yet another nod to the blonde bombshell's enduring legacy in style and entertainment, the photos tease Williams' transformation in the upcoming film My Week with Marilyn.
Williams told Vogue that in preparing for the role, she started putting on weight, but it changed the way her face looked, and she decided to stay slim and wear hip padding instead. She explained: “So at some point it became a question of, Do I want my face to look like Marilyn Monroe’s or my hips?”
Monroe's influence is still strong in Hollywood, where Megan Fox has her face tattooed on her arm, Lindsay Lohan named her clothing label 6126 after Monroe's birthday, and Scarlett Johansson played the part of America's temptress for a Dolce & Gabana ad campaign. That larger-than-life image intimidated Williams, but in the end, she absorbed as much of the actress' life as she could before filming.
“I’d go to bed every night with a stack of books next to me,” she said. “And I’d fall asleep to movies of her. It was like when you were a kid and you’d put a book under your pillow hoping you’d get it by osmosis.”
My Week with Marilyn is due in theaters November 4th and co-stars Emma Watson and Kenneth Branagh as Sir Lawrence Olivier.
